Turtle Bay

Turtle Bay is well named. It is a carpet of sand at ten metres, scattered with large boulders, and it is under those boulders that you find the turtles, settled and resting.

White sand changes everything

A pale sandy bottom throws light back instead of absorbing it. Visibility seems better, colours hold longer, and the dive is bright even under cloud.

It is the exact opposite of the northern sites on dark volcanic sand. At equal depth, Turtle Bay will always look brighter.

A resting turtle deserves respect

A turtle settled under a rock is not posing for a photograph: it is resting, and a disturbed turtle has to surface to breathe sooner than it planned.

The rule is simple: stay low, do not swim over it, do not cut its route to the surface, and never touch it. It will then tolerate you far longer.
