Trou Rouge lies south of Case-Pilote, on the Caribbean coast. It is one of our leading sites, and one of those we also dive at night.
A night dive is another site
A site dived at night is not the same site. The daytime fauna sleeps, tucked into crevices, and an entirely different one comes out: lobsters on the prowl, crabs, hunting octopus, moray eels in open water.
The reef itself changes: hard corals extend their polyps to feed, and a head that looked mineral by day becomes a living, downy surface.
What the torch reveals
By day, past five metres, red has gone. At night your torch brings every colour back at once, and the same sponges that looked brown in the afternoon turn out to be scarlet.
That is the great paradox of night diving: you see less far, but you see better.

A night dive calls for one torch per diver, a spare, and staying within arm’s reach of your buddy. It takes preparation, but it is within reach of any diver at ease with their kit.
