Pointe Batterie

The battery and the labyrinth

A broken underwater rock relief
The relief, where you thread through.

Pointe Batterie appears in the register of Martinique sites as “the battery and the labyrinth”. The second word says what is there.

A labyrinth, and how it is dived

A maze-like relief is no more dangerous than any other, but it asks one thing flat sites do not: keeping track of your bearings.

The method is simple. Note where the light comes from, register the direction of the current on arrival, and remember which side the drop-off is on. Three references are enough never to feel lost, even in a maze.

What the name tells

A battery, on a headland, is a military work: a gun emplacement meant to command a sea passage. Martinique is dotted with them, a legacy of the colonial wars.

The points that carry the name were therefore chosen for the same reason we dive them today: they command a passage, they reach out into the sea, and they see far.
