La Baleine
A boulder slope, and densely coloured shoals
La Baleine is a slope falling to about thirty-two metres. What sets it apart is what it is made of: not rock faces, but large boulders.
A slope of boulders
Picture an underwater scree, a slope of stacked blocks running down. The relief is not smooth like a cliff: it is hollows, overhangs and gaps, from bottom to top.
That is exactly what fish look for. A boulder slope offers a thousand hiding places a smooth wall does not, and that is why the shoals here are so dense.
Brightly coloured, and why
The shoals are varied and vividly coloured. Underwater, colour is lost with depth: red goes first, around five metres, then orange, then yellow.
If the fish look drab as you descend, it is not them, it is the water. A torch brings every colour back at once, and a dive at La Baleine with a light is a different dive entirely.
