The Blue Hole is dived at Le Prêcheur, at the far north of the Caribbean coast, where Mount Pelée runs down to the sea. It is a magnificent drop-off and one of our favourite sites.
A plateau, then a step
The site opens on a plateau at six metres. Then comes a step, falling to thirty metres and beyond.
Six metres is shallow: you can spend a whole dive on the plateau without ever going over the step. And it is often there, in the shallows, that the turtles are.
The green turtles
They are large green turtles, and they are the signature of the site. An adult green turtle can exceed a metre of shell and weigh over a hundred kilos: meeting one at six metres, in the light, stays with you.
They graze, they rest, they come up to breathe. If you find one settled, leave it be and stay low: it will tolerate you far longer than if you swim over it.
