Rocher La Perle is an isolated islet off Le Prêcheur, at the far north of the Caribbean coast. It lies within the Prêcheur marine reserve and is one of the best known sites on the island.
A lone rock, and what it draws
La Perle stands alone. Around it the bottom falls away and open water begins. That layout explains what you meet: shoals of trevally, barracuda, and large pelagics in from the open sea.
An isolated rock in the blue concentrates life exactly as an oasis concentrates desert animals. There is nothing else around, so everything gathers there.
What a marine reserve means
The area is protected. That does not mean it cannot be dived: it means diving there without taking anything, touching anything or leaving anything.
It also explains the abundance. An area where nobody fishes repopulates, and the large individuals you meet are precisely the ones fishing removes elsewhere.
