Le Prêcheur Garden

An offshore coral plateau, with barracuda and trevally

Town : Le Prêcheur

A colourful coral plateau full of fish
The plateau, and what lives on it.

Le Prêcheur Garden is a coral plateau lying off Le Prêcheur, at the far north of the Caribbean coast. It holds both the small reef fish and much larger individuals.

Small and large in the same place

That is what sets this plateau apart. You meet the usual coral dwellers, and above them pass barracuda, trevally and large parrotfish.

That layering is no accident: a plateau rich in small fish mechanically draws those that feed on them. Where the base of the chain is plentiful, the top follows.

The north, and its conditions

Le Prêcheur is the northernmost town on the Caribbean coast, backed against Mount Pelée. It is a superb and exposed area: trips there depend on the sea more than elsewhere.

That is also what protects it. Less visited than the south, the area keeps fish populations that heavily dived sectors have lost.
