Fond Boucher appears in the register of Martinique sites alongside Trou aux Moines and Cap Tranquille: three neighbouring names on the same stretch of coast. Our records also write it Fond Bouché: it is the same place.

What “fond” means

In local usage, a “fond” is an identified area of seabed, often gently sloping, as opposed to a point, a cape or a caye, which name a rising relief.

Our site names almost always describe the relief: a point rises, a caye stands alone, a hole sinks, a bay shelters, a “fond” spreads. It is the vocabulary of people who named what they saw.

Three sites side by side, one outing

When several sites adjoin, one outing can chain two of them with a surface interval in between. It is the best use of a morning: two different moods without restarting the boat.

The surface interval is not wasted time: it lets the body clear part of the nitrogen taken on, and it sets the depth allowed on the second dive.
